The Mark Buehrle Appreciation Series began with a home run by Gordon Beckham in the first inning, his sixth of the season. It ended with Scott Podsednik’s RBI single in the ninth, as the White Sox beat the team with the best record in the American League.
And within one game of first place in the AL Central.
In between, this game could’ve gotten ugly.
Jose Contreras struggled, walking five in less than three innings. Then the bullpen, troubled for some time, carried the team for 6 1/3 innings, giving up only one run.
- Beckham was named the American League Rookie of the Month for July before the game. This award, his play over the weekend and the Sox off-day made it a perfect day for featuress like this by Dave van Dyck at the Chicago Tribune.
- Outside of watching Beckham myself, my favorite part of his season has been the reaction of White Sox fans. First, I can’t think of the last time either team in Chicago had a guy this young meet, then run past incredibly high expectations, so I think the fact that people in Chicago have managed to keep this in perspective is impressive.
- A lot of discussion on The Score has been focused on who Beckham is going to become? Who can we compare him too? And for the most part answers from hosts and callers have been reasonable. People are saving ridiculous Hall of Fame comparisons and goals, at least for the moment.
