This week’s series between the Phillies and the Cubs at Wrigley Field is probably the best thing for all parties involved. The Cubs get to come home after a really, really bad weekend in Denver. The Phillies get to get away from all the booing in Philadelphia.
And, all of us don’t have to watch the Cubs play on the road for awhile.
The Cubs have struggled all season on the road. And on this ten-game road trip through Miami, Cincinnati and Denver, the Cubs were just trying to stay afloat.
As for the Phillies, who were at home this weekend, they had a chance to really step on the heads of the Marlins and force them to tap out of the division race. A sweep likely would have done this; instead the Phillies got swept, and the Marlins almost cut the lead in half.
The stress of the weekend pinnacled on Sunday when Shane Victorino was tossed out of the game while standing in center field. After being tossed, he proceeded to freak out.
After the game Victorino said:
“A lot of us in here were embarrassed by the way we played.”
I don’t know if they were embarrassed because they got swept and lost 12-3 on Sunday to a team trying to catch them in the division race, or if he just wanted to admit a mistake and hopefully avoid some booing in the future. Either way, the Phillies are probably glad to get out of town.
One more note:
- Pedro Martinez will make his first starter as a member of the Phillies on Wednesday. This addition to the rotation moves Jamie Moyer to the bullpen, and along with the fact that the Phillies will be in Chicago for an extra day, gives the team’s rotation an extra day off.
