Welcome to Outside the Clubhouse

Welcome to OTC, Rose Watch

Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls

Welcome to Outside the Clubhouse! For the first time since the game in Boston I fully immersed myself in Rose Watch on Thursday night. What’s Rose Watch you ask? It’s simple.

Rose Watch is something that comes in the middle of a Bulls game, when I only have eyes for two players on my TV: Rose and the guy guarding him/he’s guarding. This point usually comes in a blowout loss when I’m looking for something to watch, something to draw my interest.

Not that the Bulls dont’ have other players I enjoy watching, but I have a pretty good idea of who these players are; their respective story arcs have reached their conclusion. Take Joakim Noah for example, he has been more than a pleasant surprise; he’s secured a spot as one of the better players on the team. But I think I know what Noah is: a good rebounder, a decent passer in the high post and a guy who will unselfishly get his points through tip-ins. Luol Deng is a good mid-range jump shooter and an improving rebounder, though I have no lofty aspirations for him beyond what he already does.

To put Rose Watch in a different context, I’d compare it to Entourage. For the most part, Entourage is now a terrible show. As for Vince and his posse, I don’t care what they’re doing because their stories don’t really have anywhere interesting to go; their arcs are complete. Still, I’ll tune in because Ari Gold can carry episode from time to time and I’m somewhat curious about where his story is going.

When the Bulls are out of it, Rose is the only story I care about.
