Mike Martz spoke with ChicagoBears.com senior writer Larry Mayer on Tuesday. The entire interview is at the Bears' Web site.
In the interview, Martz breaks down the Bears' position-by-position, and says about his offense: "It’s such an easy system."
I'm not going to call Martz a liar. I'm sure he thinks his offensive scheme is easy to learn; however, he seems to be the only person who thinks it is "easy." Marshall Faulk and Kurt Warner -- the two most successful people in his offense, ever -- disagree. They think the offense is good, but "easy," not so much.
Martz describes a "three-digit system," where "everybody's told exactly what to do on every play." (Here is a pretty good description of the concept of the three-digit system). The previous description is oversimplified. There are variations that further complicate the offense: receivers still need to learn each position; there are an endless possibilities, in terms of plays; and, at least when Martz is the OC, the system is very structured.
Other things I found interesting, based on questions I've had:
- It's going to take some convincing of Martz if Devin Hester is going to continue playing a large role in the offense. "We have to be careful about how much we ask him to do on offense," Martz said. Later, he said that Hester will "be very involved," but to me, it came across like Hester's role would be more matchup-generated than "He is the No. 1 receiver because he's paid like a No. 1 receiver-generated."
- Martz is excited about the other wide receivers' speed, and he never mentions size.
- Martz thinks Greg Olsen is a good blocker. He said, "The good ones (tight ends) are good at both of those things (blocking and receiving), and Greg affords us the ability to get the best of both."
- Right now, there doesn't appear to be any answers for improving the offensive line, besides Mike Tice is going to make them better. Martz specifically mentions Chris Williams, but as for the rest, he said, "The rest of the group is going to fall into place."
