On the heels of Gordon Beckham, the White Sox have often been complimented on their minor-league system, at least locally.
While Starlin Castro may be the most popular soon-to-be member of the Cubs or Sox, the list of future White Sox, that fans are familiar with, is deep: Tyler Flowers, Daniel Hudson, Dayan Viciedo, Jared Mitchell, Jordan Danks, and more. These players have been positively talked about and, at least, have been mentioned as a future contributor to the big-league club.
And it’s not just the media praising the young Sox; Ozzie Guillen also likes the team’s prospects.
“I like our kids,” Ozzie Guillen said Sunday. “Before we’d bring guys here who were kind of an embarrassment. Now our minor-league system is better.”
Baseball Prospectus disagrees -– the White Sox’s minor league system isn’t better. Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein ranks the Sox organization 27th in baseball. And it’s not just the promotion of Beckham, or the trades for Tony Pena and Jake Peavy, that have hurt the minor-league system: Last season, the Sox organization was ranked 24th.
Without taking too much from the subscription site, the Sox are filled with “boom or bust type” talent, such as Mitchell. And this appears to be a big reason for the Sox’s poor ranking — that, and just not being very good.
In good news for Cubs fans: The Cardinals are ranked dead last, according to Baseball Prospectus.
